Process

Process in systems analysis is a purposeful, time-ordered change in the state of a system or its components, leading to the achievement of a specific result. The concept of a process reflects the dynamics of a system, connecting its structure, functions, and goals within a temporal dimension.

General Characteristics

A process represents:

  • a sequence of transformations occurring within a system;
  • a means of implementing functions and achieving goals;
  • a form of a system's activity over time;
  • the basis for modeling the dynamics of system objects.

A process describes how and in what sequence actions are performed to ensure the functioning or development of a system. It can be either internal (intrasystemic) or externally initiated (environmental).

Properties of a Process

Processes have the following characteristics:

  • Integrity — the existence of a beginning, a sequence of stages, and a conclusion.
  • Orderliness — a logical or temporal sequence of operations.
  • Changeability — a change in states, parameters, or structure.
  • Contextuality — dependence on the environment, goals, and structural constraints.
  • Observability — the ability to identify inputs, outputs, and execution stages.

Process and System

Processes are implemented within systems and through interaction with the external environment. They can:

  • change the state of the system itself;
  • be a part of its behavior;
  • express the system's reaction to disturbances;
  • ensure the implementation of functions and goals.

Processes are the way a system functions as a whole.

By Relation to the System

  • Internal — occur within the system's boundaries;
  • External — originate from the environment and affect the system;
  • Cross-cutting — involve interaction with other systems.

By Type of Dynamics

  • Deterministic — have a predictable trajectory;
  • Stochastic — include elements of randomness;
  • Cyclic — repeat periodically;
  • Continuous / Discrete — based on their nature over time.

By Role in the Life Cycle

  • Project — define changes and development;
  • Operational — reflect current functioning;
  • Supporting — ensure stability and adaptation.

Elements of a Process

Any process can be represented through its key components:

  • Initial State — the initial configuration of the system;
  • Operations or Actions — transformative actions;
  • Intermediate Stages — temporary states;
  • Output (Result) — the achievement of a goal or a change in state.

Process and Function

  • Function — answers "what" should be achieved;
  • Process — describes "how" it is achieved over time.

A function is realized through processes, and processes ensure the execution of functions.

Process Modeling

Processes are the object of modeling in various formalisms:

  • State diagrams — describe transitions between states;
  • Simulation models — reproduce the behavior of processes over time;
  • System dynamics — models stocks and flows;
