Concept
Concept is an abstract cognitive unit that reflects the generalized essential features of a group of objects or phenomena. A concept structures perception, organizes knowledge, and enables classification, reasoning, communication, and prediction. A concept is characterized by two aspects:
- Intension — the set of essential features.
- Extension — the set of objects that fall under the given concept.
Functions
- Categorization — grouping objects based on common features.
- Inference — constructing logical connections and conclusions.
- Memory organization — generalizing experience for effective memorization and learning.
- Communication — establishing a common ground for knowledge transmission.
- Knowledge construction — forming scientific theories and models.
Structure and Operations
Concepts are subject to logical operations:
- Union — the disjunction of sets.
- Intersection — the conjunction of features.
- Negation — the complement of a set.
A distinction is made between:
- Genus concepts — more general classes of objects.
- Species concepts — more specific groups within a genus.
Concept in Scientific Cognition
Concepts structure empirical data and enable the formulation of scientific problems. Their operationalization is necessary for measurability and hypothesis testing. The development of science is linked to the refinement and revision of conceptual systems.
Cognitive Theories of Concepts
- Classical theory
- A concept is defined by a set of necessary and sufficient features.
- Prototype theory
- A concept is defined by a typical representative of the category.
- Exemplar theory
- A concept is represented by a set of remembered instances.
- Theory-theory
- A concept is embedded within a system of mental theories and knowledge.
- Atomistic theories
- Concepts are considered indivisible cognitive units.
Relation to Language
Concepts are expressed through linguistic signs but are not reducible to them. Language records and transmits conceptual structures, yet concepts themselves can exist in non-verbal forms (e.g., in imagistic thought).
