# Systems engineering

**Systems engineering** is an interdisciplinary approach and a set of tools aimed at ensuring the successful implementation of complex systems. According to the definition by INCOSE (International Council on Systems Engineering), systems engineering provides a holistic, integrative approach to the development, implementation, operation, and retirement of systems.

According to the ISO/IEC/IEEE 24765:2010 standard: Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach governing the total technical and managerial effort required to transform a set of customer needs, expectations, and constraints into a viable system solution and to support that solution throughout its life cycle.

Systems engineering is based on the principles of the [systems approach](https://systems-analysis.info/eng/Systems_approach "Systems approach") and [systems thinking](https://systems-analysis.info/eng/Systems_thinking "Systems thinking").

## Purpose and Goals

The main goals of systems engineering are to:

- provide reliable and consistent guidance for the development of complex, multi-level systems;
- integrate all engineering disciplines and specializations within a single project;
- focus on customer needs, operational conditions, and the system life cycle;
- manage system complexity and reduce risks.

Within the context of systems engineering, a system is viewed as a set of interconnected elements (technical, software, organizational, human) that interact to achieve a common goal.

## Features of Systems Engineering

- Focus on the system as a whole, rather than on individual components.
- Integration of requirements, architecture, verification, validation, and support.
- Bridging the gap between different engineering and management disciplines.
- Consideration of the system life cycle—from conceptual design to disposal.
- Management of interactions and dependencies between subsystems.
- Balancing technical solutions with constraints (cost, time, resources, regulatory requirements).

## Relationship with Project Management

Systems engineering is closely related to [project management](https://systems-analysis.info/eng/Project_management "Project management") and is an integral part of project leadership. It is essential for:

- planning and directing engineering efforts;
- integrating engineering activities into the overall project context;
- coordinating among stakeholders;
- ensuring requirements traceability and compliance with project goals.

## Application Examples

Systems engineering is applied in the following areas:

- aviation and aerospace engineering;
- defense and military systems;
- energy and nuclear industry;
- transportation systems;
- large-scale IT systems and infrastructure projects.
