# Subsystem

**Subsystem** is an internal part of a system that possesses properties of relative autonomy, structural integrity, and functional completeness, but operates as part of and in the interest of the entire system. A subsystem represents a lower-level system included within a supersystem.

## General Characteristics

A subsystem:

- is a component part of a system;
- performs specific functions that support the overall goal of the system;
- can include its own elements, connections, structure, and processes;
- interacts with other subsystems and the supersystem;
- can itself be decomposed into smaller subsystems (hierarchical nesting).

## Characteristics of a Subsystem

- Structural distinctness — has its own elements and internal connections.
- Functional completeness — performs local functions.
- Controllability — can be controlled within the framework of the larger system.
- Hierarchical nesting — the subsystem is part of the structure of a more general system.
- Boundedness — interacts with other parts of the system through interfaces.

## Subsystem and System

- Every subsystem is a system in its own right, but is **secondary** in relation to the supersystem.
- A subsystem can include its own <span class="mw-selflink selflink">subsystems</span>, forming a hierarchical structure.
- The behavior of a subsystem affects the behavior of the entire system, but it does not have complete autonomy.

## Types of Subsystems

### By Functional Role

- Core — implement the main functions of the system.
- Supporting — support the operation of core subsystems.
- Control — perform regulation and monitoring.

### By Nature of Organization

- Technical (mechanisms, modules);
- Information (databases, communication channels);
- Organizational (departments, divisions);
- Logical (algorithm blocks, software modules).

### By Interaction

- Integrated — tightly coupled with other subsystems;
- Isolated — relatively autonomous, interacting through well-defined interfaces.

## Subsystems in a Hierarchy

Subsystems form a hierarchical structure:

- **Supersystem** → **System** → **Subsystem** → **Element**
- The hierarchy can be formal (e.g., an organizational structure) or logical (e.g., functional levels).
- The subsystem approach is used to manage complexity, structure the system, and distribute responsibilities.

## The Subsystem Approach

The subsystem approach in systems analysis involves:

- decomposing a system into manageable functional or structural blocks;
- analyzing internal and external interactions;
- localizing problems and solutions;
- optimizing the system by reconfiguring individual subsystems.

## Modeling Subsystems

In models, a subsystem is represented as:

- a block in a functional diagram;
- a component in an architectural model;
- a node in a hierarchical graph;
- an object in object-oriented modeling.

## Examples of Subsystems

- In a manufacturing system: supply subsystem, quality control subsystem, logistics subsystem.
- In an information system: authorization module, database subsystem, interface module.
- In an organism: cardiovascular system, nervous system.
- In management: financial subsystem, human resources subsystem, strategic planning subsystem.
