# Decision-making problem

**The Decision-Making Problem** arises in cases where a problem becomes so complex that a suitable formalization framework cannot be immediately applied for its formulation, and when the process of defining and considering the problem requires the participation of specialists from various fields of knowledge.

The term "decision" is based on the following assumptions:

1.  A certain set of possibilities is considered, which are identified in one way or another by the person making a choice.
2.  A decision is a process of searching for the most preferable options, which includes contemplation, studying a question or problem, and finding the right answer.
3.  A decision is also the answer itself obtained during the search, for example, one or more chosen options, or the result of analyzing a certain problem.

Decision-making is an activity that consists of making a reasoned choice of the best option, or several preferred options, from the available possibilities based on a certain [criterion](https://systems-analysis.info/eng/Criterion "Criterion"). In complex decision-making situations, there is always a lack or inconsistency of information. An experienced manager or specialist compensates for the incompleteness of information with their knowledge, skills, experience, and intuition. However, as the dynamics of the changing situation increase, the complexity of the systems under consideration grows, the number of possible alternatives rises, and the quantity and severity of risks increase, the decision-making problem becomes significantly more complicated. The decision-making problem is studied by many disciplines: decision theory, systems analysis, operations research, statistical decision theory, control theory, etc.
