# Comparison of alternatives

**Comparison of Alternatives** is a key procedure in decision theory, aimed at establishing differences or preference relations between two or more alternatives. It serves as the foundation for making a reasoned choice and is an intermediate step between the evaluation and selection of solutions. The comparison of alternatives is not just a technical step in the selection process, but also a substantive analytical tool. 2.  **Preference (strict or non-strict)** — one alternative is considered better than another, or at least not worse.
3.  **Incomparability** — it is impossible to determine which alternative is better due to a lack of information, uncertainty, or the differing nature of the attributes.

Such relationships can be established either explicitly (through statements by the DM) or implicitly (through structured procedures or comparison algorithms).

## Approaches to Comparison

Comparison can be based on various approaches:

- **Verbal comparison** — through subjective statements ("A is better than B," "both are acceptable," "it's impossible to say").
- **Rank-order comparison** — by ordering all alternatives according to their degree of preference.
- **Binary relations** — assigning one of the possible relationships (better, worse, equivalent, incomparable) to each pair of alternatives.
- **Functional evaluations** — alternatives are compared based on the values of a summary function (e.g., a utility function) that reflects the DM's preferences.

## Role of the Decision-Maker's Preferences

The DM's preferences are the basis for any comparison:

- They can be expressed explicitly — through direct instructions and evaluations.
- They can be revealed during the comparison process — through a sequence of decisions made or actions taken.
- Often, preferences are formalized using binary relation models or are reduced to numerical functions that reflect preference.

It is important to consider that the DM's preferences can be:

- Inconsistent (e.g., due to subjectivity).
- Contextual (dependent on the problem's framing and conditions).
- Hierarchically structured (when there are multiple levels of criteria and sub-goals).

## Comparison and Structuring

The comparison of alternatives is closely linked to the preliminary structuring of the problem situation: identifying criteria, defining attributes, and clarifying objectives. Without this, the comparison risks being subjective and incomplete.

Furthermore, it is often through the process of comparison that the following are discovered:

- Flaws in the definition of criteria.
- Contradictions in evaluations.
